Isabella O Ford

Some background on the lady who provided the bench at the bottom of Long Causeway!  Fascinating lady.

Isabella O. Ford (1855 – 1924)

Isabella Ford is best known for her work in the suffrage, trade union and labour movements. She believed firmly in the equality of women.

Isabella Ormaston Ford was born in 1855 into the Ford family at Adel Grange.  Her father, Robert Lawson Ford, was a solicitor (now Ford & Warren in Leeds), and her mother was Hannah (nee Pease). She had two brothers and was one of six daughters, although two died in infancy.

History of Adel

We are pleased that Val Crompton's book has sold so well.

Since it has been featured in The Dalesman and The Countryman Magazines, copies have been sold far and wide through Wharfedale Family History website.

'History of Adel' has now been re-printed,  proceeds are for the upkeep of Adel Parish Church.  Copies are available from the back of church or by post from:

About Adel - from Wikepedia

Adel is a suburb in North Leeds, West Yorkshire.  It is situated between Holt Park, Weetwood and Alwoodley.

To the north are the villages of Arthington and Bramhope and the market town of Otley.  In common with many areas of Leeds it is not easy to define the boundaries of Adel, but Adel Church and the two schools are well to the east of Otley Road, the A660, although the post office is on that road.  There is one pub in Adel and there is a restaurant/pub on the Otley Road around the corner from Gainsborough Avenue(Adel).

BBC Hands on History

The BBC has recently launched "BBC Hands on History" - helping to bring history to life for families:http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/handsonhistory/

The first phase of the project focuses on the Normans and as part of this, they have launched a map of the UK featuring walks, trails and great day trips to Norman sites and buildings around the country.

Adel St John the Baptist has been included and we want to help promote the campaign by linking to Hands on History via the above link.

The Hands on History site also includes free activity packs which families can download, including 'I Spy' guides for Norman churches and castles.
