Adel Reformatory Update
Written by Greg Mulholland MP

As your local MP and local campaigner, we are writing to update you about the issue of the Adel Reformatory and the plans for the replacement of the Adel Secure Unit at the Eastmoor site.

You may have heard the excellent news that the Adel Reformatory buildings have now been granted Grade II listed status.

However, we are aware the buildings are rapidly falling into disrepair and have therefore written to Leeds City Council to raise concerns about the future of these buildings. The reformatory buildings are an important part of local history and their future needs serious consideration.

We have also raised concerns that current proposals to construct a new large single-storey Eastmoor Secure Unit would mean that any plans for development of the reformatory buildings - including proposals for a zero-carbon housing development - would be no longer viable.

It is clear that the future of the listed reformatory buildings has not been fully determined, and I have been pushing for Leeds City Council to resolve this matter, especially considering the historical importance of the Adel Reformatory buildings. There are plans for imminent demolition of some of the buildings on the site and we have asked for clarification of what exactly is to be demolished.

Until there is a clear plan for the reformatory building, we have asked the council not to proceed with the plan to expand the secure unit. It is important that local people have a say in this issue as soon as possible. You can contact Leeds City Council's Planning Department on 0113 222 4409 or at Leonardo Building, 2 Rossington Street Leeds LS2 8HD. We would also welcome your views, if you wish to contact us on 0113 226 6519 or at Wainwright House, 12 Holt Park Centre, Holt Road, LS16 7SR.

We will of course keep you informed of any developments on this important issue
