Adel History Group Feb 2010 News
Written by Adel History Group

First, a warm welcome to all those of you who are new to the mailing list….though the mailings could well be a little erratic as I am finding it harder to arrange a programme of events. I would ask if any of you find out about lectures, walks etc with a historic theme, do let me know so that I may pass them on to everyone.

February Feedback    Thank you to all who supported the coffee morning on February 6th – I cannot say the great numbers there were as a result of the Sternberg/Adel School display, but undoubtedly some were.  Joyce’s talk (see attachment) too was very well supported. It was via the History Group that the offer of the talk reached the Adel Association who, along with the Church, hosted the talk in aid of the Bell Tower appeal. Over £1,000 has been raised by these two events.

A very great plus is that a lady new to the group may be making a start on putting the Register of Baptisms Oct 1858-June 1952 onto computer. I have also received the student report on Lawnswood Cemetery direct from the students. It is very good. I can email a copy to anyone interested. The official copy (and the Eddison material & report) will appear later. The sheet I forwarded on the origins of words and phrases seemed to be well received, though our expert on Anglo Saxon Britain (Professor Joyce Hill) thought the dating suspect and that although there might be “an element of historical truth in some comments” they would be “pursued more accurately in Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable”.

Tuesday April 27th at 2pm. A Tour of Leeds Library, Commercial Street has been arranged, with some Adel-related material on display. Donations will be requested for the “Preserve our Words” appeal. Please book with me (0113 261 1363). I’m sorry the timing rules out those of you at work.

Sunday May 9th, Adel Parish Boundary Walk (with refreshments in the Stables at 5pm).  It starts at the Stables at 9am. A map with details of the 15 mile route and the timings can be obtained from Val Crompton  email or tel. 0113 225 9142. You are very welcome to join Val for all or part of this interesting History Walk. Some people join us for 3 or 4 miles. (I’m a fine weather, short distance walker but dropped out at Golden Acre Park on one year. I dropped out at Lawnswood Cemetery last year, then walked home –Ann)

Saturday June 12th at 10am Paul’s Pond & Cockerhill Farm Walk which Val has offered to lead.

In August we will be doing an Eccup History Walk with Richard and Deborah Hainsworth. Either an evening or on Saturday. We have been offered talks too, but it is difficult to fit them in with other events this year; so the first is scheduled for March 2011. I would very much welcome some ideas and practical help, in filling the gaps.

Other local events    Crag House Farm is having a fundraising coffee morning this Friday, 26th February at 10.30am.  We really enjoyed out visit to Crag House in December.

Two events in May could be of interest: Saturday 8th May Lineham Farm have a Bluebell Open Day from 10am-3pm. The refreshments will be good and it’s in a lovely location. If you are worried about driving the narrow road – at the last open day I attended a local Club supplied stewards – so it was safe enough. Their website www.linehamfarm.co.uk should have details of the event shortly. The Wharfedale Family History Group has a day’s event in Addingham on 8th May 9.30am-4pm with talks on the Asylum/Poor Laws & Life in the 1950’s. See www.wharfedalefhg.org.uk .
