Via the website we recently received this email from a descendant of the Draper Family. Thanks to Joan for this contribution. I would like to add some information to the note attached to your research group's history of members of the Draper family whose names appear on the Adel war memorial. My brother Michael and myself are the children of John Godfrey Beresford Draper, who was the fourth son of W.H. Draper, the third son of his second marriage. He, like his elder brother William, served in France during the war, but he survived, in spite of being at one point severely gassed. He married Aileen Masefield in 1923, and died in 1972. My brother and I both have children and grandchildren; his four grandsons carry on the Draper name. A friend drew my attention to your interest in the Draper family. I was glad to hear of the commemoration of those who tragically died in the war.
The History Group have responded:- How lovely of you to get in touch and add to our knowledge. I am so thrilled you have found the information on the Adel Association website. Last November the Royal Armouries did a memorial presentation at our church, homing in on Rector Draper's family. At that stage I did not know who John Draper was, though he had been present in the voting lists - only when the 1911 census came out did he appear in the family home and the relationship was clear. It is really nice to know that he had a family and the line continued. Rector Draper appears to have been a remarkable man. He wins Adel around almost immediately if the Parish magazine are anything to go by and certainly got the sympathy vote, losing I think 3 family members (father, brother & mother from memory) in quick succession. His mother's death moved him greatly. The newspaper accounts of his reception in London are glowing..and the account of his successor's induction to Adel I think starts with a mention of Rector Draper (a bit galling for Rev Hayden whose day it was!) Thank you again for getting in touch. |
