Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement (ANDS) Adel has been developing for over 2000 years and all around us we can still see evidence of that heritage – Roman remains, Anglo Saxon antiquities, causey stones from the middle ages, our Norman Church, Jacobean and Georgian rectory, many grand Victorian houses whilst the 20th century has brought a variety of fresh architectural design into our community. The work done by the ANDS group recognises that change is vital to growth and development but at the same time we wish to ensure that what makes Adel special is retained for residents for the next 2000 years. We welcome sensitive developments as a thriving community needs families and children and schools and we want all residents to enjoy the best of what makes our community distinctive today: our green spaces, the trees, parks, woodlands, country and urban walks, tranquillity, and our sense of heritage from this ancient settlement. In any community there will never be total agreement on what should come and what could go but there can and should be debate. This statement has emanated from many of our residents, not just an opinionated few, and will serve to focus that debate and provide an opportunity for us to promote acceptable change while working to protect our community from unfettered and insensitive developments. This statement is already being used by the Council planners which will give them a greater understanding of the needs and concerns of our community. It is up to each one of us in Adel to continue to fight to preserve the best of what we have and endeavour to promote developments that complement our unique environment. We still have copies of this document for sale at the special price of £3 whilst stocks last. The photographs and maps alone give a fascinating and representative picture of our community Dr. Barrie Hopson Chairman ANDS and now Chairman of The Adel Association |
